Curious about our characters parents

I have had this question in the back of my mind for a while now, that happens to be who are our characters parents? We seem to never really have an insight in-game about where/who are our characters parents? Making me wonder who was our character before all of the adventure of Jorvik, as we were only suppose to be here for the summer, yet we settled in more and got ourselves a horse. Has something happened to our parents that made us do this or?
