Trivia[]
- While SSO has advertised the breed as the Ardennes, they confirmed in a comment on Instagram that they based the coat colors off of the Swedish Ardennes.[6] [5] While the two share a name, they are separate breeds from one another.
- The Ardennes is one of the oldest breeds of draft horse, tracing its lineage back as far as Ancient Rome.[7] The Swedish Ardennes is a relatively new breed, having been developed by crossing the Ardennes with the North Swedish Horse in the 1870's.[8]
- While the Swedish Ardennes was first considered a separate sub-group of the Ardennes in the 19th century, today it is considered a completely separate breed, and the two breeds are not accepted in each other's registries.[9]
- The Ardennes only comes in bay, chestnut, roan, cream and grey.[10] The Swedish Ardennes comes in black, chestnut, bay, silver, grey, and roan.[8]
- Both breeds average about the same in height (15.3-16 hands), but The Ardennes is significantly denser in muscle than the Swedish Ardennes, weighing 300-600 lbs more on average. This also makes them significantly thicker and more compact in appearance.[8][10]
- The Swedish Ardennes has much more stout legs with very little feathering that typically only covers the back of the cannon bone.[8] The Ardennes has short legs but elongated joints with very heavy feathering covering the cannon down to the fetlock.[10]
