The lead rope function is a function that allows the player to lead their horse by its bridle.
The function is unlocked individually for each horse (except Spirit) when they reach level 3 in horse progression. Previously, it could be purchased from a Horse Trainer for 135 SC. The player had to be at least level 7 and be a Star Rider.[1] If the player purchased the lead rope function before the horse progression update, the function is available for all horses regardless of their level.[2]
To use the function after it is unlocked, the player must dismount their horse and stand close to its head. After opening the radial menu and selecting the Lead Horse button or pressing the T hotkey, the player character will then automatically pick up the horse's reins, and the player can walk around normally with the horse following them. The horse must be wearing a bridle in order for this action to be available.
Should the horse get stuck while the player continues to walk, the player character will drop the bridle automatically.

- The function came to Star Stable Online on December 16, 2015.[3]
- The level requirement for the previously purchase requirement was dropped from level 10 to level 7 on April 8, 2020.[1]
- The way the player leads a horse, while understandable from a game mechanic perspective, is both an incorrect and unsafe way for a horse to be led.
- Horses should almost always be led from the left side, with the lead held by two hands (preferably the leading hand holding the lead about 8 inches from the chin, and holding the excess lead in the other hand), and with the horse walking along side the leader (never behind or in front).[4]
