Hugh Shepherd is a Veterinarian and Physical Therapist who runs the Rescue Ranch on South Hoof Peninsula.

In SSO, it is revealed that Hugh had to leave the army because of a leg injury. After experiencing the therapeutic powers of horses in a very dark time in his life, Hugh decided to devote his life to helping others recognize this. He restored South Hoof Farm and renamed it Rescue Ranch. It has become a place for people and horses to recover from both physical and mental illness.

The name Hugh is of Germanic origin, dating back to the Germanic element "hug", meaning "heart, mind, spirit".
