Etymology[]
Carmela is the Italian form of "Carmen".
Her former name, Catherine, is French form and common English variant of Katherine, ultimately derived from the Greek name Αικατερινη (Aikaterine). The Etymology, however, is debated and could mean several different things:
- It could be derived from the earlier Greek name ‘Εκατερινη (Hekaterine), which originally came from another greek name, ‘εκατερος (hekateros) meaning “each of the two”.
- It could derive from the name of the goddess Hecate; the goddess associated with witchcraft, crossroads, tombs, demons, and the underworld, from the Greek ‘Εκατη (Hekate), possibly derived from ‘εκας (hekas) meaning "far off".
- It could be related to Greek αικια (aikido), meaning "torture".
- It could be from a Coptic name meaning "my consecration of your name".
- In the Christian Era, it became associated with Greek καθαρος (katharos) "pure", and the Latin spelling was changed from Katerina to Katharina to reflect this.
