Archaeology was first introduced to the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur on 3 December, 2014 and later introduced to Epona on 3 August, 2016. Those who have unlocked the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur will follow Nic Stoneground in his quest of discovery. After curing Frank Einstein of his zombie-like illness, the player is given a pickaxe to dig up and discover archeological findings. Any fossils can be turned into Professor Jura in Firgrove Village and artifacts can be turned into Harley in Nic Stoneground's camp.
In order to unlock Epona's archeological feature, the player must be liked with the A.A.E. Archaeology Department faction and have completed at least one dinosaur skeleton with Professor Jura. Once Epona is unlocked, Professor Jura will send them to New Hillcrest to find Hawaii Jones. After completing quests about finding Mississippi Jones' treasure, the player will then be able to dig for themselves around Epona and turn their findings into Walter Winterwell and/or Professor Chiron.
Fossil Finding[]
Once the player learns archaeology, they will receive a pickaxe named "Old Betsy". At that time, they will then be free to dig within the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur and eventually Epona.
In order to find fossils and/or artifacts, they must find rocks containing these items. When close to a dig site, text will appear above the player to inform them what type they've come across. You find an "extra interesting" dig site that contains more valuable pieces or an ordinary dig site. The player then must dismount and use the pickaxe on the rock to discover the object(s). Once discovered, it will be placed in their inventory. Depending on the object, it can be traded in for valuable/expensive items or sold for a smaller profit.
Only 7 rocks are active or sparkling at one time. Once a normal rock is dug up, it may become active again straight away or after one of the other 7 locations has been mined. Everyday, there is one extra-interesting find in each of the four areas in Epona and the Valley of the Hidden Dinosaur.
