A devastating earthquake had shaken the island of Jorvik in the year 1871, but it is not considered a "naturally" occurring earthquake.

A popular rumour states that the earthquake was caused by a duel in Epona between Maurice Buttergood and Bernard Winterwell XII. The Winterwells and Buttergoods had been rivals since 1588 when Bernard Winterwell I started a rebellion against the Buttergoods. While dueling near one of the family's dynamite factories, they blew themselves up, causing the earthquake which presumably shook down Jorvik Stables.
